At the heart of Djembe is a belief that public art should be shaped by the community it represents. This project is not just for Austin—it’s being built with Austin. Every pot, pan, and wooden spoon donated adds both material and meaning to the final sculpture. Every story shared and every pair of hands that helps assemble the work contributes to a larger narrative of rhythm, resilience, and unity.
Donate Materials, Share Your Story Austinites are invited to donate used stainless steel pots, pans, or wooden spoons—ordinary objects that will be transformed into something extraordinary.
These items carry history, memory, and personal significance. Contributors are encouraged to share a brief story or reflection with their donation.
Each item brings its own rhythm to the work.
The Djembe project offers community members two distinct ways to provide hands-on support and contribute to the creation of Austin's newest public artwork.
Fabrication Support: Volunteers will work directly with artist George Sabra on-site,assisting with the build process and preparing materials for the sculpture. This is a chance to be part of the creative process from the ground up.
On-Site Assembly: In the final installation phase at Brush Square, volunteers will help assemble and attach the pots to the sculpture. This is a unique opportunity for those who have donated a pot to personally attach their item to the artwork.
